Elephant rescued at Lendri Maliguda on 7th March-2013

At Lendri Maliguda in Koraput district , It is a fight for saving the life of a female Elephant by People , Officials in Forest Department and other members of the Elephant herd to which she belonged to . This elephant fell ill with serious infection and was not in a position to move . Yesterday night she tried to take water from a nearby drain . But the soil was lose and she had failed to control herself and fell into the drain . She looked helpless . There was no need of a tranquiliser to touch her . She was approached by one and all including the officials in Forest Department . Everyone tried to pull her out of the drain . But efforts were not yielding any result . While people had left their hope , the herd of elephant which was staying in the nearby mountains had reached her in the night and tried to lift her using their traditional methods . But by morning their effort too had failed . They returned . Looking at the seriousness of the infection , the district had requested the state to send a team from Nandankanan , Bhubaneswar  for help . As always , the state was insensitive to the cause and only sent one doctor by Hirakhand which reached around 11 AM , two hours late than its usual time . It was surprising to see the attitude of the state government towards the welfare of animals where they could take chances by not sending a team by a special vehicle . However thanks to Dr.P.K.Roy , Veterinarian from Nandankanan for working with local medicos from Koraput who took keen interest in cleaning the infection , giving injectables and administering salines after the elephant was pulled out with the support of ODRAF . Hopes are now more for her survival . But she was not able to stand . Hence everyone has left her there with a secrete mode of guarding her while expecting the arrival of the Herd of Elephants to try the natural way of making her stand up .
