A meeting of IGNOU coordinators and prof.Srikant Mahapatra , Director , Regional Services Division , IGNOU , New Delhi was held at Koraput today .

Gopobandhu Das Memorial Lecture at CUO on 21st Jan-2013

Refugees in the history of partition of India and Pakistan were not a homogenous group and had further division including groups like Dalits who had to be studied with special attention for their significance as an integral part of the miseries and challenges of partition . Prof.Sekhar Bandopadhyay ,professor of Asian History , Victoria University of Wellington , New Zealand delivered his lecture on “Dalits in the long history of partition in Eastern India” as a part of the “First Utkalmani Gopabandhu Dash memorial lecture in social sciences” by Central University of Orissa(CUO) being organized in Bhanja Mandap at Sunabeda in Koraput district on Monday .

While offering his views on the history written so far on the partition and refugees in eastern India in the post independence era , Prof.Bandopadhyay highlighted the relevance of the school of thought which recognized the link of Dalits with the issues along with the Hindus and Muslims which had got mentioned in general so far as the sole participants . Migration had the need of resources and depending on that with individuals and groups , the homogenous nature of refugees was affected with Dalits finding a special mention for the lack of their progress with the mainstream of development of the nation they had stayed in comparison to some of the fore runners among the refugees who could grow at a faster rate for different reasons . While instances of Dalits fighting with Muslims over land ownership issues had mention in the history , their collective suffering for the lack of education and means of development prompting them to fight against others in the comparatively better off world around them also need a mention in the long history of partition , he added.

In her inaugural speech , Surabhi Banerjee , vice chancellor of the university highlighted the mission of the university in bringing qualitative people from across the globe to speak on various subjects of interest by organizing different lecture series in the tribal dominated region of Koraput . While the university in her short span of existence had already organized scores of lectures on topics of importance inviting personalities of international repute , it was for the first time that a memorial lecture series was dedicated to a famous son of the soil like Utkalmani Gopabandhu Dash as a mark of gratitude of the university to him for his innovations in the field of education , she added.

Prof.K.S.Chalam ,professor of economics and   former vice chancellor of Dravidian University (Kuppam) presided over the meeting . Earlier in the day , Prof.Banerjee , inaugurated the academic block being constructed with an expenditure of Rs.3 Cr. in the newly coming up campus of the university at Sunabeda .With the university library , hostels for boys and girls in addition to the guest house on the verge of completion , the university was expected to function in the new campus from February this year , she added.

Inauguration of Academic Block of CUO at Sunabeda on 21st Jan-2013

The Academic Block of the newly build campus of Central University of Orissa near HAL plant and NAD at Sunabeda in Koraput district was inaugurated by Prof.(Dr.) Surabhi Banerjee , Vice Chancellor of the university at 10 AM today in presence of the Pro VC , Registrar , Officials and students of the university . The building is built at a cost of Rs.3 Cr. With the library coming up adjacent to the academic block coming up soon the classes are expected to begin in the first week of February , Pro VC said . Here also we could see  the photos of Hostel building , Guest House , Boundary wall and road to the university campus .

Agitation by Students of DAV College Koraput against Change of the name of College on 19th Dec-2012

Students and Alumni of DAV College, Koraput demanded the state government to withdraw its decision to change the name of the college to Govt. College, Koraput on Wednesday . In a memorandum addressed to the higher education minister , the members of the joint working group warned the government of a larger agitation if the decision was not withdrawn before 25^th of this month . While taking out a rally in the town they also demanded for a vigilance enquiry into the process in which the decision was taken hurting the sentiments of thousands of DAVians . Shops and other establishment in the town brought down their shutters for one hour from 11 am expressing solidarity with the demand .
